Dr. H. Louis Harkey, Chairman and Professor of Neurosurgery, is director of the Spinal Surgery Program of the Department of Neurosurgery. He is experienced in all aspects of spinal instrumentation for complex traumatic, degenerative, and neoplastic disorders. Dr. Harkey is a recognized authority on the management of disorders of the craniovertebral junction, spine and spinal cord tumors, and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Andrew D. Parent, Professor of Neurosurgery, is a widely respected Pediatric Neurosurgeon with extensive experience in the management of congenital spinal disorders (myelomeningocele, myelocystocele, lipomyelomeningocele, tethered cord syndrome) and the Chiari malformations. Following surgery, children with congenital spinal disorders are followed in the Blake Spina Bifida Clinic by a multidisciplinary team including Pediatric Orthopedists, Pediatric Urologists, Pediatricians, physical and occupational therapists, and dietitians.
Although spinal cord tumors in children were largely viewed as inoperable until recently, many such tumors may now be safely removed using modern microsurgical instrumentation, image-guided surgical navigation including Interventional MRI, intraoperative ultrasound, and electrophysiologic monitoring. Following surgery, children with spine and spinal cord tumors are cared for by a multidisciplinary team that includes several nationally recognized Pediatric Oncologists.
